There are 3 hazard classes or levels:  A, B, and C.  Class A hazard work involve high risk activities and Class C hazard work involve low risk activities.  


There are 3 types of workplaces:


  1. Close workplaces requires up to 20 minutes surface travel time to a medical facility.
  2. Distant workplaces requires more than 20 minutes surface travel time to a medical facility.
  3. Isolated workplaces are:
    • located more than 40 minutes surface travel time from a medical facility, or
    • is not served by an all-weather road designed and maintained to a standard that permits an ambulance to travel at a speed of 50 km/h or greater.


Class C hazard work

Class C hazard work means:

  1. Work of an administrative, professional or clerical nature;
  2. Work that does not require substantial physical exertion or exposure to hazardous conditions, work processes or substances; and
  3.  Any other work involving only activities that are, in the opinion of a safety officer, similar to the activities of work described in paragraph (1) or (2).

Class B hazard work

Class B hazard work means work involving

  1. Recreational activities, including:
    1. guiding and outfitting,
    2. tourism operations, and
    3. campgrounds;
  2. The operation of:
    1. medical services or facilities,
    2. recreational facilities,
    3. extended care services or facilities,
    4. social services programs,
    5. facilities providing accommodation,
    6. retail stores, and
    7. greenhouses;
  3. Food and beverage preparation and sales;
  4. Fuel yards and fuel distribution;
  5. Small appliance service and repair;
  6. Janitorial services;
  7. Laundry services;
  8. Motion picture production;
  9. Moving and storage;
  10. Warehouse operations;
  11. Delivery services; and
  12.  Any other work that, in the opinion of a safety officer, is neither Class A hazard work nor Class C hazard work.

Class A hazard work

Class A hazard work means work involving

  1. Construction, demolition and associated work, including work on:
    1. industrial or commercial process facilities,
    2. pipelines and related gas or oil transmission facilities,
    3. commercial, residential and industrial buildings,
    4. roads, highways, bridges and related installations,
    5. sewage gathering systems,
    6. utility installations, and
    7. water distribution systems;
  2. The operation and maintenance of:
    1. food packing or processing plants,
    2. electrical transmission, generation and distribution systems,
    3. foundries,
    4. industrial heavy equipment, and repair and service facilities,
    5. automotive repair and service facilities,
    6. sawmills and lumber processing facilities,
    7. lumber yards,
    8. machine shops,
    9. metal fabrication shops,
    10. gas, oil and chemical process plants,
    11. laboratories,
    12. steel and other base metal processing plants,
    13. waste water processing facilities,
    14. solid waste facilities, and
    15. industrial process facilities not elsewhere specified;
  3. Woodland operations;
  4. Wildland fire operations;
  5. Gas and oil well drilling and servicing operations;
  6. Mining and quarrying operations;
  7. Mineral exploration;
  8. Seismic operations;
  9. Detonation of explosives; and
  10.  Any other work that, in the opinion of a safety officer, is similar to the work listed above.
