These are features that an AED model may have.
CPR Coaching: refers to the instructions that the AED will give to the rescuers when the devices pauses for the continuation of CPR. Usually the machine will tell the rescuer where to place his or her hands for chest compression; to follow the beat to compress; and to give two ventilation (depending on the AED setting) when needed. CPR Coaching usually includes a CPR Metronome of some sort.
CPR Metronome: refers to a counter for the rescuer to follow when providing chest compression for the casualty. Some AED devices will have a beat to follow, while others will have a voice prompt (to say "push"). The CPR Metronomes usually have a rhythm that is in accordance to the CPR guidelines (100 beats per minute). Some CPR Metronomes have a range of beats (e.g. Zoll AEDPlus range from 60 beats to 100 beats).
CPR Feedback: refers to instructions given by the AED device to tell the rescuer to push harder (if the chest compression are not deep enough) or push lighter (if chest compression are too deep). The AED device may also inform the rescuer to push faster (if the compression are less than 100 per minute) or push slower (if compression are over 120 per minute). Some AED devices (e.g. Cardiac Science Powerheart G5) will provide feedback for compression depth and compression rate. Other AED devices will only provide feedback for compression depth (e.g. Zoll AEDPlus). CPR Feedback requires special AED pads to be used with the AED. The Zoll AEDPlus and the Zoll AED 3 includes 1 set of pads with CPR Feedback. St. John Ambulance sells the Cardiac Science Powerheart G5 with one set of pads with CPR Feedback and one set of pads without feedback.
Currently, the only AED models SJA BC & Yukon offers that do not have CPR Coaching and the CPR Metronome are: Physio-Control LIFEPAK 1000, Physio-Control LIFEPAK CR+, and Physio-Control LIFEPAK Express. All the Philips AED models have a button to push if the rescuer wants to have CPR Coaching and the CPR Metronome. The Cardiac Science Powerheart G3 and G5 AED models have settings for the rescuer to include or exclude the CPR Coaching and the CPR Metronome. The settings must be selected prior to the use of the AED during a rescue. The default setting for the Cardiac Science AED models is to include the CPR Coaching and CPR Metronome.
SJA BC & Yukon offer the following models with CPR Feedback: Cardiac Science Powerheart G5, Zoll AED 3, Zoll AEDPlus, and Physio-Control LIFEPAK CR3. There is a device (made by a third-party vendor) that can be attached to the Philips Heartstart FR3 that will provide CPR Feedback.
